Nested Options Presets extend Divi 5's preset system in two ways. You can now apply option presets to sub-options inside an option group (such as the Border inside a Button option group), and you can nest option presets inside other option presets to create a third layer of preset nesting.
This unlocks true modular design. A single border preset, for example, can be reused inside a button preset, inside a call-to-action preset, and directly on an image module. Update the border preset once, and every place that uses it updates automatically.
What's New
Divi 5 presets have always supported element presets and option group presets. This update adds two new capabilities:
Presets on nested (sub) options. Sub-options inside an option group (for example, Call To Action → Button → Border) now support presets. Previously, presets could only be applied at the element level or on top-level option groups.
Option presets inside other option presets. You can nest an option preset inside another option preset, creating a third layer of preset nesting on top of element presets and option group presets.
How Nested Options Presets Fit Into the Preset System
Divi 5 has several preset behaviors. Knowing which does what prevents confusion:
Element Presets apply a collection of styles to a specific element type (e.g., a Blurb module preset).
Option Group Presets apply styles to a single option group (e.g., a Border preset, a Button preset) and work across any module that contains that group. For details, see How to Use Option Group Presets in Divi 5.
Stacked Presets let you apply multiple presets to the same element or group at once. For details, see Stacked And Nested Presets in Divi 5.
Nested Presets (element level) let you nest an option preset inside an element preset - covered in the same Stacked And Nested Presets article.
Nested Options Presets (this article) add presets on sub-options and presets nested inside other option presets.
Nested Options Presets also work hand-in-hand with Composable Settings in Divi 5. Any sub-element you enable through Composable Settings can now have its own option preset applied.
Apply a Preset to a Nested Option
Sub-options inside an option group now show the same preset icon as top-level option groups.
Open the Visual Builder.
Click a module to open its settings and go to the Design tab.
Expand an option group that contains sub-options (for example, Button).
Hover over the nested option (for example, Border) and click the Preset icon.
Select an existing option preset, or click Add New Preset to create one.
Configure the styles and click Save Preset.
The preset is now applied to that nested option. The same preset can be reused on any matching nested option across your site.
Nest an Option Preset Inside Another Option Preset
You can place one option preset inside another so that updating the inner preset automatically updates everything that contains it.
Create a standalone option preset first - for example, a Border preset set to your site's default border style.
Open a module's settings and hover over the option group you want to edit (for example, Button). Click the Preset icon and open an existing Button preset for editing, or create a new one.
Inside the preset editor, expand the nested option (for example, Border).
Click the Preset icon on that nested option and select the Border preset you created in step 1.
Click Save Preset.
The Button preset now contains the Border preset as a nested reference. Any change to the Border preset propagates to every Button preset that nests it - and to every element that uses that Button preset.
A Practical Example
Say you have two element presets: Dark Blurb and Light Blurb. You want both to use the same button style and the same pill-shaped border.
Create a Pill Border option preset with a high border radius.
Create a Solid Button option group preset. Inside it, nest the Pill Border preset on the button's Border sub-option.
Create your Dark Blurb and Light Blurb element presets. Inside each, nest the Solid Button preset.
Result: every button across your site inherits the Solid Button style, and every button border inherits the Pill Border style. Change the Pill Border preset's radius once, and every button on the site updates, regardless of which blurb preset it sits inside.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the "nested presets" covered in the Stacked And Nested Presets article?
How is this different from the "nested presets" covered in the Stacked And Nested Presets article?
The earlier article covers nesting an option preset inside an element preset. Nested Options Presets adds a new layer: option presets nested inside other option presets, plus presets applied to sub-options that never supported them before.
Do I need Composable Settings enabled to use Nested Options Presets?
Do I need Composable Settings enabled to use Nested Options Presets?
Not for native sub-options that already existed. But any sub-element you enable through Composable Settings also supports presets, which expands where you can apply them.
What happens if I change a nested option preset?
What happens if I change a nested option preset?
Every preset that nests it updates, and every element using those presets updates on the front end. Changes propagate through all layers of nesting.
Can I still override a nested preset on a specific element?
Can I still override a nested preset on a specific element?
Yes. Static styles set directly on an element override preset values, the same way they always have.
