For this article, we'll be using the famous plugin UpdraftPlus for backing up our sites. So go ahead and install the plugin to start the process :)

1. Take a manual backup first

The first thing we should do after installing the plugin is to take a fast backup right away!

This is very simple, just go to Dashboard > Settings > UpdraftPlus Backups > Back/Restore tab, and click on the Backup Now button:

A window will pop up to choose the folders and whether to backup the database as well or not. We recommend using the default settings:

It should take a while for the backup to complete. The larger your site is, the longer it will take. Once it's done, you can download it to your computer by clicking here:

With this, you saved a backup for your site on the same server and on your computer.

Keeping the backup on the server is good to restore it with UpdraftPlus later on when needed. When you want to restore it, simply go to the Existing Backups section and click the Restore button:

2. Scheduled Backups

Now that we have our first backup manually, we can set the plugin to take regular backups automatically,

To open the plugin settings page, go to Dashboard > Settings > UpdraftPlus Backups > Settings.

Choose the file backup schedule, if it's going to be manual or daily, weekly, etc. Also, have a look at the other settings and change them accordingly for your needs.

Next, you will need to set where you'll get the backups. You may choose to save it on the server(be aware that, if the server data is lost, you won't get the backup! This is why it's recommended to send backups elsewhere, for example to DropBox, Google Drive, etc.

Each service has its own settings and instructions, please refer to UpdraftPlus documentation for detailed instructions.

We also have an article about the plugin on our blog if you'd like to read more:
